The story

Le Grand Meaulnes

When I was 14 I received the book "Het Grote Avontuur"
by Alain Fournier. from my grandmother.
It's the Dutch title of Le Grand Meaulnes (Meaulnes is the main character). A 1914 book set in the French countryside near Bourges. It became one of my favorite books, and when I started the shop at 25, I quickly found a suitable name.
French ancestors, all those childhood holidays in France, a love of beautiful old things, and this book, this story... The name was perfect for me and my new adventure. And besides, I wanted to keep the shop different, constantly innovative and surprising, so it would remain a great adventure for my customers too. For me, that's certainly been a success!

Meaulnes is sent from Paris by his mother to live with the headmaster's family in Epineul le Fleuriel. There he 'borrows' a carriage and sets off. He ends up in a castle where a
(wedding) party is with all people dressed up and falls in love..... You can read the rest of the story yourself.
The school where he stayed actually exists and is now a museum.
If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit! I was lucky there were no other visitors; the school was opened especially for us, and we wandered around there peacefully, with plenty of time to take photos. It's exactly as it was in Meaulnes's time.

The store

1994-2014

Trip down memory lane with all the shops from small to large.
Handmade products, antiques and vintage items from France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, items from all over the world, and for a period I wholesaled beautiful items from China, partly designed by myself based on things I found there. Parties, exhibitions, and events in the warehouse and later on H'straat in the showroom downstairs... Sweet Memories
