An enchanting spot "au milieu de nulle part" (in the middle of nowhere) in Burgundy. As the name suggests, this unique villa is built on the foundations of an old watermill, with a small river (the Beuvron) flowing right past the house. This beautiful location is rented out by Gilberthe, a Dutch woman who has lived there since 1999. Because of the pilgrimage route that passes by, she once started offering a place to sleep and food to hikers, and that's how the Moulin du Merle became a guesthouse. For years, you could also rent a single room for a night and enjoy dinner and breakfast in the delightful garden. There are lovely corners all around the house, by the water, under the trees, or among the chickens. There is also a very large vegetable garden that provides the vegetables and fruit for the daily meals that Gilberthe often prepares herself for her guests. I love the house, the decor... every room is equally beautiful and cozy, decorated with the owner's collection of French treasures. The house is now available for rent as a whole, which is also fantastic for a family gathering or a weekend with friends. Still, I'm glad I've been able to stay several times in various rooms for one or two nights in this beautiful Moulin...

Ruurd Wiersma museum in Burdaard

A house full of naive wall paintings

I could write all sorts of things about it, but you can read the story on the website of this charming Frisian painter's museum . If you're in the area, be sure to stop by. A special—and delightful—experience: you call a mobile number, and a volunteer from the village comes to give you a personal tour. You'll hear the story while sitting at the table in Ruurd's house, enjoying a cup of coffee.
